They extorted money from a number of business owners before they were caught in Nerja
Two brothers who were arrested after taking refuge from the Civil Guard in the Cave of Nerja each face a possible 21 years in prison for an extortion racket they ran, pretending they were members of the ETA terrorist organisation.
Named by Europa Press as A.O.G.R. and J.I.G.R., they ran the scam in 2008, extorting more than 17,000 € from business owners in Málaga, Córdoba and Granada provinces during the year. Some of their threats were to kill either their victims or their relatives if they refused to pay ETA’s ‘revolutionary tax’.
The last of their 13 targets was a Nerja businessman who was placing a Civil Guard report about the threatening phone call he had received when the suspects called again. An officer took the call, posing as the target’s son and a meet was arranged to hand over the money. The Civil Guard were waiting there for the brothers to turn up to collect a bag which supposedly contained the sum they had demanded from their latest victim.
The pair were chased by car to the village of Maro and were finally captured after running inside the Cave of Nerja. A programme for the Maro local feria was found in a search of their car with sums of money noted down against adverts taken out by their victims.
