PostSubject: Spain loses ‘Rioja’ battle    Mon May 09, 2011 7:01 pm

For 12 years Spain has been battling with Argentina over the use of the name La Rioja.

The Argentinian wine ‘La Rioja’ was introduced to Argentina by the Spanish in 1591.

Spain has been getting concerned that wine consumers will confuse the wines from La Rioja Argentina with wine from the northern Spanish DO of Rioja and in 1999 they started proceedings against the Argentinian region which has only just been settled.

The courts, however, dismissed the case saying that there should be little confusion as the La Rioja Argentina are white wines made from Torrontes whereas the Spanish Rioja are red wines made from Tempranillo. The Rioja consejo is going to appeal the decision.

From a personal perspective when I hear the words La Rioja I immediately think of Spain.
