Two out of ten Spaniards have been drunk ten times or more this year
There is a greater dependency on alcohol has the recession continues
The National Survey for Drug and Alcohol Use in Spain has shown that two out of ten Spaniards got drunk ten times or more this year.
This year’s data shows a jump in the consumption of alcohol across the board, with little difference between the sexes or age groups.
Half of Spanish men confessed to having gone on at least one alcohol binge this year, and the survey indicates that while there are two million drinkers at risk, there are an estimated 90,000 dependent on alcohol.
A binge drinker is considered to be one who has five or more alcoholic drinks in less than two hours.
21% of men and 8.6% of women said that they had been drunk at least once over the past month, generally but not always at the weekend.
On a positive note the study showed a fall in cocaine use, down from 1.6% to 1.2% of the population.
Minister for Health, Leire Pajín, has said that she is concerned by the numbers and promised work on the matter, particularly focussing on the young and their botellón fiestas.
