SPAIN’S Leader of the Opposition, Mariano Rajoy said yesterday in Palma that were his Partido Popular party (PP) to govern the country, it would do so through consensus and would not adopt a policy of staying in power at any cost, or through “buying” support. “We don’t want a government,” said Rajoy at an event organised by the regional PP, “that adopts policies which are aimed purely at keeping its opponents out of power.” Rajoy gave a reminder that “soon the elections will be upon us” and “we’ve got to speak clearly about our intentions.” The Leader of the Opposition remained confident that his party would have the support of the people of Spain.

He confirmed that the key aim of his government would be to create employment, and as such, demanded of the present Prime Minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero that he fulfil the agreement reached in Congress to help the small to medium-sized business associations and the self-employed. It is these people, said Rajoy, who provide 80 percent of jobs.

Spain is in decline because of the wrong policies being adopted, claimed Rajoy, but when the “right government” is in power, he furthered, the country will recover its status.
