To beat the cold and protect their crops against the big freeze this year farmers in Mallorca are using mini robots to watch the crops and monitor weather conditions.
Farmers in Sa Pobla state that technology is helping to protect the island’s potato and artichoke crops.
When the temperature drops below -1C an alert is sent from the robots by text message to the farmer’s mobile phone. The farmer then texts the robots back with instructions of what needs doing such as watering or activating heating.
Less technological means of protecting crops are where farmers have double glazed their greenhouses.
